Criminal activities by foreign nationals in the Czech Republic

Anotation:
The report focuses on the number of foreign nationals in the Czech Republic and the development of illegal migration and criminal activities committed by foreigners within the country. In 2023, the share of foreigners with permanent or long-term residence permits in the total Czech population was 9.75% (compared to 10.2% in 2022). While 2023 saw a significant decrease in illegal migration compared to 2022, it still marked the second-highest number of illegal migrants detected in the past five years. The percentage of foreign nationals among the total number of recorded offences increased by 0.7% to 11.0%, while the percentage of prosecutions increased by 1.3% to 11.8%. However, this figure cannot be directly compared with the aforementioned share of foreigners in the Czech Republic's total population, as this figure only includes the number of foreigners with long-term or permanent residence permits, not tourists or other short-term visitors. The structure of crimes committed by foreigners has remained relatively stable over the long term, with an increase in so-called 'other' and 'remaining' crimes. The most common offences are crimes of endangerment under the influence of an addictive substance, property crime (in particular theft), obstruction of official decisions, and negligent traffic accidents.
